Kyla Magun is a senior associate at Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP.
Kyla has worked on a wide range of civil litigation while at Kaplan Hecker, including representing Columbia University on issues related to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and representing clients in commercial disputes at trial and on appeal. She also maintains an active pro-bono practice, having represented the victims of the racial- and religious-based violence in Charlottesville during the summer of 2017. She also successfully represented a student-led LGBT organization in Starkville, Mississippi who had been unlawfully denied a permit for a pride parade.
From 2018 to 2019, Kyla clerked for the Honorable Colleen McMahon, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Kyla graduated from Columbia Law School, where she served as the Executive Essays and Reviews Editor of the Columbia Law Review. She published a note, A Changing Landscape for Pretrial Detainees? The Potential Impact of Kingsley v. Hendrickson on Jail-Suicide Litigation, 116 Colum. Law. Rev. 2059 (2016).
During law school, Kyla interned at the New York State Attorney General Office’s Civil Rights Bureau, the Legal Aid Society’s Prisoners’ Rights Project, and the public service group of a commercial law firm, where she provided legal research for writs of habeas corpus. She also participated in the Incarceration and the Family Clinic, representing current and formerly incarcerated clients in family court on matters resulting from incarceration.
Prior to attending law school, Kyla worked in education as a first-grade teacher in Baltimore and as a program manager for a non-profit, education leadership development organization. She graduated with honors from Stanford University, where she received her B.A. in History. She also received a Master’s degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University.
