Emma DeCourcy is an associate at Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP.

At Kaplan Hecker, Emma plays a highly active role in the firm’s public interest litigation practice. Most notably, Emma was part of the legal team that successfully represented writer E. Jean Carroll in her sexual battery and defamation suit against Donald Trump, securing a $5 million jury verdict on her behalf after under three hours of deliberations. Emma is also a member of the team representing victims of consumer fraud in a federal class action lawsuit against Donald J. Trump, his adult children, and the Trump Organization.

Emma specializes in representing clients in significant and sensitive matters, including civil litigation pertaining to discrimination based on gender and/or sexual orientation. Emma has also represented clients in claims brought pursuant to the Adult Survivors Act, and she is a member of the team working to invalidate Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law.

Emma joined Kaplan Hecker & Fink from the New York City Law Department, where she was an Assistant Corporation Counsel. At the Law Department, Emma worked to defend the City of New York and its officials in federal civil rights cases.

Emma is a graduate of Fordham University School of Law, where she was a member of the Fordham Urban Law Journal and an executive board member of the Fordham Moot Court Board. Also at Fordham, Emma was a student attorney for the Federal Litigation Clinic, where she represented indigent individuals in federal appeals. Emma’s writing was published twice during her time in law school. Her note, “The Injustice of Formal Gender Equality in Sentencing,” was published by the Fordham Urban Law Journal in 2019, and her co-authored article, “The Ethics of Gender Narratives for U.S. Corporate Boards,” was published by the N.Y.U.
