In the aftermath of the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP, then only a few months old, filed its first lawsuit on behalf of nine brave plaintiffs against the white supremacist leaders, promoters, and foot soldiers responsible for the violence in Charlottesville in August 2017. Robbie Kaplan spoke to Law360 about “No Accident,” a powerful documentary that chronicles this seminal civil rights case from beginning to end, including how the legal team exposed the communications of a broad network of co-conspirators, the practical and emotional challenges of litigating a case full of hate-filled rantings, and how they convinced a unanimous jury of twelve Americans to hold the defendants accountable for their actions.

"As the filmmaker said, I think at the premiere in New York City, I spent a lot of time pushing them out of the room — which I fully copped to, I definitely did," Kaplan told Law360. "But in retrospect, looking at it today, I'm very glad that they did it, and I'm very glad I didn't push them out of the room all the time."
